Pope Francis, 88, was diagnosed with a polymicrobial infection of the airway. The information was released by the Vatican this Monday (17.FEV.2025). The religious leader has been hospitalized since Friday (14.FEV) at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital in Rome, Italy, when he was hospitalized to treat a bronchitis.

Polymicrobial infection is caused when there is an infection originated by more than one microorganism. It can be of different types, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi or protozoa. It is installed when a microorganism finds favorable condition and causes multiple infections in an organ.

According to the director of the Vatican Press Office, Matteo Bruni, the religious leader slept well, had “a good night’s sleep”, had breakfast and read the newspapers, as usual.

Pope’s health has caused Vatican concern because of the physical demands of the position. However, Francisco has shown resilience.
