International environmental organization inaugurates the first official delegation in the country with two major focuses: forest fires and ocean protection. Emblematic ship Arctic Sunrise has arrived and can be visited.

The official presentation took place in Lisbon, with the visit of the Arctic Sunrise Late Break, one of Greenpeace’s emblematic vessels, which will end the week in Porto, where It will be possible to visit the ship.
Two of Greenpeace’s main focuses in Portugal will be the forest fires – “One of the topics that most worries Portuguese citizenship,” says Greenpeace Portugal Toni Roseiro’s director – and ocean protection.
Portugal’s choice for opening a delegation is linked to its vast Exclusive economic zoneone of the largest in the world, and the crucial role that the country plays in the preservation of the oceans.
Oceans -related issues are one of the priorities of Greenpeace in Portugal, explains to Toni Melajoki, executive director of the new Portuguese association: “They are quite important for Greenpeace and, with Portugal with one of the largest exclusive economic zones, makes perfect sense to be here”.
“It has always been a failure not to have an office in Portugalwhen we have presence in almost every European countries, ”he says.
Greenpeace’s performance in the country has been constant, however, with the organization to denounce harmful practices to the oceans, such as the excessive shark fishingespecially from Portugal and Spain. One of the organization’s first campaign actions in the national territory took place in 2008, when Greenpeace activists made a peaceful protest in supermarkets, drawing attention to the sale of threatened fish.
In addition to the defense of the oceans and the fight against fire, Greenpeace plans to expand the debate in Portugal on broader environmental issues, such as the climate crisis and seca.
With an independent approach to any government or corporation, financed exclusively by citizens, Greenpeace in Portugal intends to continue its fight against pollution, environmental degradation and climate changealways focusing on non -violent actions and campaigns of public awareness.
