The Algarve Coordination and Regional Development Committee (CCDR) participated in the 9th Silves Capital of Orange Show, at the invitation of the municipality of Silves, in an event that took place last weekend and aimed at promoting algarve citrus and from the county.
The Algarve is the main region of citrus producing in Portugal, representing 88% of national production. This sector plays an essential role in regional economy and agriculture, facing challenges such as sustainability, efficiency in the use of water resources and competitiveness.
CCDR Algarve’s participation focused on the event’s seminars and conferences, bringing together experts and investors to discuss strategic topics for the sector.
One of the most relevant moments was the XXI Conference, which was opened by the president of CCDR Algarve, José Apolinário, and included two technical panels: “Pests and emerging diseases in citrus culture”, presented by Sandra Germano, and “Platform of Platform Watering warnings (stop) ”, conducted by José Carlos Tomás, where the water management and the national strategy for the sector were discussed. Another high point was the debate “Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises: What supports? What financial instruments? What incentives? ”, With the participation of Aquiles Marreiros, executive vowel of the Algarve 2030 regional program, which presented information on applications for incentives for micro and SME.
The seminar “Climate change and citrus”, which was attended by the vice president of, Pedro Valadas Monteiro, focused on the challenges of sustainability and competitiveness of citrus in the Algarve region. The event was promoted by CCDR Algarve and the Prr Agro+Efficient Project.
With protected geographical indication (IGP) recognized at the national and European level, Algarve citruses are the result of the commitment of the sector companies and their interaction with research entities and public services in the area of agriculture.
The latest production campaign pointed to a 10% increase in citrus production compared to the average of previous years, with the continuation of growth next year. The sector has an annual turnover of about 388 million euros, being a pillar of the regional economy.
In addition to supplying the domestic market, algarve citrus is among the most exported products by Portugal. By 2023, exports exceeded 197 million euros, an increase of 10.4 million euros compared to the previous year, consolidating algarve citrus as one of the most relevant agricultural activities in the country.
