The Chamber of Faro guaranteed this Tuesday that works are underway to improve the working conditions at the Local Sapadors Fire Barracks, in response to a requirement in this sense made on Monday by the Professional Firefighters Union.
On Monday, the National Union of Professional Firefighters (SNBP) required an “immediate intervention” of that authority to improve the work conditions of the city’s Sapadors Firefighters, which work, according to the trade union structure, with “degraded” equipment and facilities.
IMMEDIATE AND EFFECTIVE MEASURES BY THE COMPETENT AUTHORITIES ”are needed to give Faro Sapadores“ appropriate facilities, operating equipment and decent working conditions, essential for an efficient and safe relief service, ”said SNBP in a statement.
In response to a reaction request sent to Lusa, the municipality said on Tuesday that “Building works of the Municipal Relief Operations Center (CMOS) are underway, which will operate in the barracks of the Firefighter Sappers Company (CSB) from Faro ”.
“Significant improvements were also made in some spaces, namely at the level of the resorts and camarons”, and a training room with more modern technological resources was created, ”the municipality needed.
“With the progress of the work, it was necessary to adopt temporary solutions, in order to ensure the continuous functioning of the barracks,” acknowledged the municipality, stressing that it is being developed, “in conjunction with CSB, a project to build a new barracks , functional, modern and adjusted to the needs of the firefighters and the population they serve ”.
Firefighters also come across the “degrading conditions of the barracks”, where there is a refectory “without the minimum hygienic conditions” and “recently renewed” resorts, but that have been “without hot water since December”, exemplified the union.
However, the municipality claimed that, in December, “there was a severe malfunction in the sanitary water heating equipment, and there was no reparation capacity”, and the procedure for acquiring a replacement system ”began shelter of public hiring rules.
The municipality clarified that, until the conditions for the baths with the acquisition of a new water heating equipment, “the resorts of the Municipal Field of Penha were available”, located about a kilometer from the barracks, for Firefighters can bathe with hot water.
“[…] The municipality is currently in progress a contest for admission of 20 new firefighters and recently acquired a new urban fire fighting vehicle (VUCI), to incorporate into the municipal fleet, as well as a set of new technical materials to support work, as Thermal chambers and gas detectors, which reinforce the safety and effectiveness of operations on the ground, allowing faster, safe and accurate interventions, ”said the Faro Chamber.
In the statement issued on Monday, he assured him that he has made “repeated attempts at dialogue” with the House, but regretted that, so far, the problems identified remain “without solution”, putting “at risk the safety of firefighters and Quality of relief provided to the population ”of the county and the Algarve.
Firefighters face a “continuous degradation of working conditions” and it is “evident the lack of commitment of the responsible entities,” said the SNBP, accusing the municipality of “inaction” and at risk and help.
