European leaders held an emergency meeting on Monday (17) in Paris, in response to the proposals that will be aligned between the United States and Russia.
The meeting in the French capital ended with Polish prime minister Donald Tusk’s statement that defense spending will be excluded from the European Union’s deficit limit to its nations, making room for more countries investments in NATO.
“Especially because we have a solid financial reserve in Europe. I asked the head of the commission and she confirmed – we are talking about many, many thousands of millions of euros that can be released immediately, ”said the prime Minister.
It is a reaction to the Trump administration, which has already made it clear that Europe can no longer depend on the United States for its safety. The meeting was also a response to the White House decision to leave his former continent’s allies outside peace negotiations with Russia.
On Tuesday (18), the American delegation of Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet with the team of the Kremlin Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, Saudi Arabia, under the intermediation of heir prince Mohammad Bin Salman.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he will not accept any agreement where there is no participation of Ukrainian authorities and also advocates the inclusion of Europe in the negotiations.
The fear of the European leaders is that Trump’s peace plan to make concessions to Russia to endanger the future of Ukraine. “We greet the negotiations, but we need to remember that this cannot be a false end. We cannot repeat the mistakes of the past, because this is not the first time that Putin Russia attached territories that are not theirs, ”said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
The European Union, however, is divided as to the use of troops. Sweden, Denmark and the United Kingdom agree to send peace forces to the country of Eastern Europe, but this measure is not a consensus. The English Prime Minister Keir Stmerer defends the initiative claiming that the goal is to ensure that the eventual ceasefire does not only mean a break until Putin attack again.
“What is at stake is not just the future of Ukraine. It is an existential issue for Europe as a whole, therefore vital for Britain’s national interest, ”said the English leader.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned the American envoy to the Russian-Ukraine issue, General Keith Kellog, that only just and lasting war resolution can guarantee stability for the east European country. Kellog should meet Zelensky on Thursday (20).
Zelensky said he wants to take the general to the battle -front lines so that he has a precise notion about the conflict.
