Brazil will not opinion on the adoption of oil cartel policies on production cuts and prices; idea is to present alternatives on energy transition and monitor technical decisions

The President (PT) decided on Tuesday (18.FEV.2025) to join the letter of cooperation between oil producing countries. This means that Brazil will not officially integrate OPEC+ (Organization of Oil and Allied exporting countries), because it will not be able to give an opinion on discussions about oil -oriented policies, such as production cutting and price definition.

Participation will be limited to accompanying the technical decisions of the cartel and presenting new ideas and alternatives to promote the energy transition.

The entry into the so -called “Forum of Oil Producing Countries” was decided at CNPE (National Energy Policy Council) this 3rd. At the meeting, the country’s adhesion at the IEA (International Energy Agency) and Irena (International Renewable Energy Agency) was also agreed.

With the entry into 3 groups with different views on the energy transition, the country shields criticism for approaching the oil cartel.

In meetings with OPEC, Brazil will play a secondary role, but within the plans of the Minister of Mines and Energy ,. According to him, the approach to the cartel aims to present new ideas and alternatives for decarbonization directly to oil producing countries, especially accelerate the energy transition with biofuels.

“It’s just a letter and a strategy discussion forum of oil producing countries. We should not be ashamed of being oil producers ”said Silveira to journalists.

As showed the Poder360there was a certain resistance from the government to join the oil group. In addition to the advertisement of the forum in the same year that Brazil will host COP30 (United Nations Conference on Climate Change), there is also concern with the repercussions of the country’s pretensions of placing itself as the global leader of transition energetic.
