Intelligent life could be much more common than previously assumed

The search for intelligent life away from the earth went through various optimistic and less optimistic phases in the history of mankind. While scholars such as René Descartes, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Immanuel Kant, partly assumed that neighboring celestial bodies were also inhabited by highly developed civilizations, their research caused disillusionment.
