The measure stems from the process that forced the politician to restore R $ 417 million to the public coffers
The TJ-SP (Court of Justice of São Paulo) ordered the attachment of 19 properties that are on behalf of the former governor and mayor of the city, Paulo Maluf, 93. The measure is due to a process that condemned the politician to return R $ 417 million to the public coffers.

In December 2023, the Swiss justice ordered the return of the money, but Maluf’s defense appealed the decision, which was upheld in the new sentence. The return of resources was determined by the condemnation of the politician for deviations of resources in the 1990s, at the time when he was mayor of São Paulo.

According to the court, the money was diverted abroad. Part of the amount was used to buy shares of the company that belongs to the family of Maluf.
The repatriation was determined after the international cooperation procedure presented by AGU in conjunction with the MPF (Federal Prosecutor) and the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. In 2017, Maluf was convicted by the Supreme Court (STF) to 10 years and 6 months in prison for money laundering.

One of the pledged properties is a mansion in Guarujá, city of the coast of São Paulo.
Maluf is free after meeting more than 1/3 of the sentence and meeting the legal requirements to benefit from the Christmas pardon.
