Deputies argue that the measure violates principles of economic freedom and lead to increased costs for producers

The new bench in the House of Representatives presented this Monday (17.FEV.2025) a PDL (Legislative Decree Project) to revoke the Ordinance of (Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock) that obliges producers to stamp the eggs individually with the expiration date and the product lot. This is the document (PDF – 153 kb).

The justification of the deputies is that the measure hurts the principles of economic freedom and results in the increase in costs for small and high school producers. “The requirement that each egg will be stamped individually, with expiration date, is a measure that is not reasonable, and is still disproportionate, especially for small and medium producers.”says the document.

The map ordinance states that egg producers will be required to stamp eggs with information from March 4. The document was published in Official Gazette of the Union On September 6 last year and gave a period of 180 days for producers to suit the measure. Here’s (PDF – 384 kb).

At the time, the ordinance did not cause a noise in Congress, but the escalation of egg prices last month made the deputies react, mainly because the measure can cause an increase in producers’ costs and further pressure the price.

“The Lula government seems to be pleased to create useless bureaucracies that only serve to make the Brazilian’s food out. Now they invented that even egg has to be stamped, as if it were to solve a real problem. In practice, it is just another absurd cost thrown on the back of the producers and, in the end, who pays the bill is the people, who can no longer stand to see the prices firing ”said the deputy (Novo-SP).

To the Poder360informed that the measure brings benefits regarding the food security of Brazilians. On the other hand, small businesses will be required to buy a specific machinery to stamp the eggs.

“Large companies, especially those that already export, have this implemented technology. However, for small producers, the acquisition of the machine and the adequacy of the production line may represent a significant cost ”said the administrative director of the Egg Brazil Institute, Tabatha Lacerda.
