Prenatal family allowance is a monthly financial support attributed by social security for pregnant women from the 13th week of gestation. The purpose of this provision is to support future mothers in the pregnancy phase, ensuring economic support before the child’s birth.

Who is entitled?
According to a practical social security guide, this support is intended for pregnant women who meet the following criteria:
- Have reached at least the 13th week of pregnancy;
- Be resident in Portugal or equivalent to the resident;
- Belong to an aggregate whose furniture assets (such as bank deposits, shares or obligations) do not exceed 125,400.00 €;
- Have a reference income below the limit value established for the assignment of the allowance.
How to request support?
The order should be made preferably online through the Social Security platform. To make the application, the user must:
- Access the platform and authenticate with your credentials;
- Click on the “Family” section;
- Select “Family and Prenatal allowance”;
- Choose the option “order new prenatal allowance (new)”.

Alternatively, the request may be presented in person in Social Security Care Services.
Term to request support
Prenatal family allowance can be requested from the 13th week of pregnancy. If not required during pregnancy, there is an additional period of six months after the birth of the child to place the request, in which case it is processed in conjunction with the family allowance for children and young people.
This support aims to reduce families’ charges during pregnancy, promoting better economic conditions for newborns and their caregivers.
