Case process under confidentiality in the Supreme; former minister will be one of the last to give testimony
Minister André Mendonça, of the Supreme Court (STF), extended for 60 days the investigation investigating Silvio Almeida, former Minister of Human Rights, for sexual harassment, a crime that was committed against Racial Equality Minister Anielle Franco.
The inquiry is in charge of the PF (Federal Police), which requested more deadline to complete the investigations. Among the pending steps, for example, is the hearing of Almeida himself, who has not yet given testimony and should be one of the last to be heard in the case. Anielle was heard in October 2024.
The case is being processed under the Supreme. In authorizing the investigation, Mendonça understood that the process should be processed in the Supreme Court because the accusations occurred when Almeida was in the position of minister. Upon completion of investigations, the PF may or may not indicate the former minister, depending on the findings of the inquiry.
Accusations
The accusations against former Minister Silvio Almeida emerged in September 2024. The organization Me Toowho acts on the protection of women victims of violence, said he welcomed women who reported sexual harassment by the teacher and lawyer.
With the scandal, Silvio Almeida was fired by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. In a statement after the accusations were released, Silvio Almeida said he repudiated “with absolute vehemence” the complaints, which he called “lies” and “absurd unlaws” disseminated to harm him.
