Pioneering investigation to understand and improve patients’ monitoring is conducted by Ipasia and ULS de Matosinhos.
Thousands of people who suffered a stroke (AVC) have, among other problems, Afasia.
Aphasia is a Language Disturbancea communication disorder that moves language processing, impairing the ability to speak and understand.
It affects the ability to speak, understand, read and write. It is a frequent consequence of stroke but continues to be underdiagnosed and little understood.
Therefore, Ipasia – Portuguese Institute of Aplain and the local health unit of Matosinhos (with the collaboration of the stroke unit of Pedro Hispano Hospital) will develop a Pioneering study to analyze the incidence and impact of the condition on stroke survivors.
The focus of the study will be to characterize the psychosocial impact From the aphasia to first stroke survivors residing in the municipalities of Matosinhos, Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim, admitted to that unit in 2023.
Main objectives: Determine the prevalence of aphasia after a first episode of stroke, identify the needs of stroke survivors with aphasia and their families in relation to rehabilitation and support services and determine the degree of satisfaction regarding health and rehabilitation services to which they had access from hospital admission to the present.
In a statement sent to ZAP, it is read that only then will it be possible to identify gaps available services and propose possible solutions, considering barriers and facilitators to their implementation.
The basis of the study will be the institutional databases, to identify users with aphasia and map their clinical path. After collecting all the information, a detailed statistical analysis will be performed, whose results will be released in 2026, in report format and infographics.
