Daily, exercises and 7 hours “non -negotiable” sleep: know Airbnb CEO routine

The CEO of, Brian Chesky, has achieved many achievements in its 43 years of life. To name a few: he launched a mark of $ 100 billion, he graduated in arts with specialization in industrial design, befriended a former US president and became a bodybuilder.

However, the balance between work and personal life is a little complicated.

“There are many things about which I claim to know a lot, and balance between work and personal life is not one of them,” says Chesky Fortune. “I’m 43 years old and I’m single, so the best people to answer this question are those with families.”

“I managed to have the luxury of automating things,” explains Chesky, releasing time for exercises, travel, reading and connection with friends.

“My parents, when I was a child, cut the grass, cleaned the house, washed the dishes,” he says. “I tried to automate as much as I could, so that the time I spend is dedicated to work or true leisure activities and as little logistics as possible.”

Chesky emphasizes that it is a “privilege” to be able to automate his tasks, but “sometimes I go to the supermarket just so as not to lose sanity, to live in the world,” he says. “I just do it periodically because I’m working hard.”

However, Chesky has a tip to manage the busy daily life of a $ 100 billion Fortune 500 brand: the diary.

“I keep a diary and a digital notes, such as Apple Notes, and every day I write notes for myself,” he says, although they are often not complete phrases. “Pros are more like bullet points, and it’s anything that comes to mind.”

Among other leadership advice – including encouraging CEOs to choose favorites – Chesky gave the Fortune An exclusive view of his daily routine, which he admits begins “very late” for an entrepreneur.

8h30: Most entrepreneurs defend an early start of day to enjoy personal time before running to the office. For Chesky, your daily routine “starts very late, because I’m going to bed very late.”

Even early in the beginning, the executive’s first tasks are still focused on productivity, starting with a little cardio, such as StaizriMaster or a walk with his dog. Chesky, a competitive former phychiculturist, notes that his morning exercise routine starts with an empty stomach “when I’m low in glucose.”

“There are many hills where I live, so I try to do it for about 20 minutes in the morning,” he says. “So I will start my day.”

9h: While Mondays are often spent working from home during the rest of the week, Chesky bathes and eats a light breakfast before going to Airbnb headquarters in San Francisco. As a coffee fan, Chesky can enjoy one to two cups of black coffee without milk or sugar.

10h: Chesky’s meetings begin, but he emphasizes his preference for a “unstructured day of work.”

“I usually don’t like having consecutive meetings,” he says. “I like to have some free time to wander and be able to do some concentrated work.”

Chesky also abhors individual meetings with direct subordinates, preferring meetings with multiple participants.

“The individual meetings model is flawed. It’s a recurring meeting of one hour when the employee controls the agenda, ”he says. “What happens is that they often don’t talk about the things you want to argue, and you end up becoming their therapist.”

12h: Chesky makes five meals throughout the day, starting at 9am, pause for lunch at noon, enjoying a snack at 3 pm, dinner at 6 pm and ending with another snack at 9 pm.

“The only warning is that I also do some intermittent fast,” he says. “I found that this is kind of useful.”

15h: Chesky enjoys his third meal of the day and can take a break to cross Airbnb’s large office space and greet colleagues.

Recently, the executive has also implemented transcendental meditation – pausing for up to 20 minutes twice a day – in his routine to help with stress or overload.

“But I don’t do that for 20 minutes, twice a day,” he says. “I’m lucky if I can do this a few times a week.”

18h: Chesky’s meetings agenda tends to decrease after 6 pm, but his day of work rarely ends at the end of office hours, and he rarely stops communicating with his colleagues. However, Chesky says he almost never sends emails. Instead, emails are reserved only for serious or subtle topics, and he responds “with as little words as possible.”

“The way to communicate with me is almost entirely by text message,” he says.

7:30 pm: The second Chesky training of the day starts around 7:30 pm with a personal trainer. The CEO trains with weights four times a week and ends with half an hour of cardio before returning home.

21h30: Chesky spends half the nights of weekends with a mix of personal activities such as finding friends, reading, drawing or watching TV. The other half of the week can be spent focusing on concentrated work.

“Sometimes I call employees who are available at night to know how they are, or I do really concentrated, and I may be writing from 10 pm to 1am,” he says. “I don’t do it every night, but if I really want to do a deep job, I’ll do that.”

1h30: Chesky, along with Melinda French Gates, who recently considered the phenomenon “so stupid”, rejects the notion that CEOs should give up adequate sleep in favor of productivity.

“[Um] Not negotiable is that I want to try to sleep at least seven hours, ”he says. “I know there are people who live with four, five, up to six hours of sleep, but the extra time you save no sleep probably makes every hour of the next day a little less productive.”
