Jair Bolsonaro accused of attempted coup d'état

In addition to the crime of attempted coup d’état, the former president of Brazil is accused of criminal association and attempted abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was accused on Tuesday of attempted coup by the Attorney General’s Office.

The prosecution was signed by the Attorney General, Paulo Gonet, and will be considered by the Federal Supreme Court.

In addition to the crime of attempted coup d’état, Bolsonaro is accused of criminal association and attempted abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law.

Jair Bolsonaro is accused of leading an attempt to coup after the 2022 presidential elections, which he lost to Lula da Silva. In total, 34 people were accused of encouraging and carried out attacks against the Brazilian democratic state.

In addition to the former president, another 33 people were accused, including former Minister Walter Braga Netto, candidate for vice president in 2022 in the candidacy of Jair Bolsonaro, who is under pre-trial detention.

He believes the Brazilian Attorney’s Office that there was a plot that “had leaders the President of the Republic himself and his vice presidential candidate, General Braga Netto.”

“Both accepted, encouraged, and performed acts typified in the criminal legislation of attack against the legal good of existence and independence of powers and the rule of democratic law,” read the accusation.

The lawsuit now goes to the Federal Supreme Court, which will evaluate the prosecution and decide whether the suspects are trial. If that instance grants the prosecution, the case will take place on the baton of Alexandre de Moraes, Minister of the Supreme Court.

It should be noted that Jair Bolsonaro had already been indicted by the Federal Police in two other cases: one in which he had received jewelry while he was in government and another of alleged forgery of COVID-19 vaccine certificates.

If it is convicted of crimes linked to the alleged coup, the former president of Brazil is in danger of a sentence up to 28 years in prison, in addition to 30 years of electoral ineligibility. He who is already prevented from applying by 2030 for attacks and lies about the electoral system.
