The mayor of Faro, Rogério Bacalhau, will remain in the presidency of the Chamber of Faro until the end of his term and will only take office in the administration of Águas do Algarve, the mayor announced on Tuesday.
Rogério Bacalhau said he had accepted an invitation to join Algarve from January 2025, but “successive bureaucratic barriers” led him to ask his name to be confirmed for the new position after the term of his third and last mandate ahead of the municipality of Faro.
“As it is from public knowledge, I received an invitation in 2024 to integrate the board of directors of a regional entity. After consideration, I accepted this invitation on the condition of just taking office in early January 2025, as it considered it essential to complete some important projects for our county, ”the mayor explained in a statement.
Rogério Bacalhau (PSD) clarified that he accepted the invitation with “the condition of only taking office in early January 2025”, to “complete some important projects” for the municipality of Faro.
“However, taking into account the slowness of the elective process for this position, motivated by successive bureaucratic obstacles, as well as the proximity of the end of my term as mayor of Faro, I ended up requesting that this election occurred only after the end of the end Even, allowing me to continue performing my current functions with total dedication and commitment, ”he said.
The mayor thus guaranteed to the citizens that he will move on the municipality until the next mayor of Faro is elected, in the local elections scheduled for September or October this year, and then take office.
On January 6, the mayor of Faro, Rogério Bacalhau, told Lusa that he predicted to leave the municipality on the 13th, when his name was proposed and voted favorably to preside over to the Board of Directors of Águas do Algarve.
Rogério Bacalhau, which fulfills the third consecutive mandate in the municipality, cannot be recalled, due to the law of limitation of mandates, and its departure to integrate the staff of the company Algarvia would raise the current councilor and vice president of the municipality, the presidency, Paulo Santos.
The proposal for his appointment would be taken to the shareholder assembly on the 13th, and would be “at the departure”, but followed by successive postponements, leading the mayor to announce now that he will stay in office until the term of the mandate.
