Cats like warm. In short, they like to look for a warm and cozy place. But that doesn’t mean they can’t stand the winter. They’re just a little more delicate…

I consulted the topic of cats with winter with a veterinarian. I learned that he often encountered the same questions in his Prague office. So when is it too cold for the cat? And what to do to make your four -legged mours be safe and healthy during the winter?

What temperatures suit cats? Clearly from the vet in this YouTube video:

A long number of factors, such as the weight of the cat, its age, the type of hair. Even the type of breed is important. The cat well fastened, so let’s understand the large and heavy, the cold tolerates significantly better than the skinny, tightened. That makes sense. Older cats and kittens have thinner fur AI less mass, that is, the cold resistant to no longer chooses.

In addition, they increase the risk of hypothermia, lay maybe. For hypothermia, be careful not only in older cats, or new births. Those with a weaker heart and thyroid disorder also suffer from hypothermia, but your veterinarian will surely tell you.

How to know that the cat is cold?

Simply. Often sitting huddled or hunched and trying to find a warm place. In the worst case, you will see how the cat shakes and it has cold ears and paws. In that case, the situation was already beating on the alarm.

If you are not sure if the walk would not benefit her, just stick to the simple rule – when there is less than 7 degrees Celsius outside, you should keep it at home, even if she wanted to. This is the boundary temperature at which some cat races are at risk of hypothermia.

If the pet is exposed to low temperatures for too long, it may have hypothermia, or the overall hypothermia of the body. It is defined as body temperature below 35 ° C. Moreover, the risk of hypothermia is enhanced if the cat manages to soak in some way. How to get to know hypothermia? The cat behaves confused, breathes poorly, has stiff muscles and enlarged pupils. In the worse cases, it may fall into a coma. In the event of the slightest suspicion that something is wrong with your four -legged furry, immediately alert the veterinarian.

Can a cat go out now in winter?

Can, why not. The cat is not a naked toddler. Cats tolerate cold. Just pay attention to the factors we wrote about above. Ie. Take into account her age and health. In addition, do not take your furry out if:

  • Has no hair or just a thin blanket
  • Never ever been outside
  • He has not secured access back home
  • Has snowing or forecast reports a descent of temperature

In order not to forget, do not forget to clean the cat after returning home paws. Now in the winter they do not make a well -sprinkled salt on their skin, moreover, as soon as they return home, they tend to lick their feet and thus get undesirable toxins of stomach irritation and vomiting.
