Amazon MGM Studios won the creative control of the James Bond movie franchise by establishing a new joint venture With the former responsible for the series, Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.
The agreement paves the way for Amazon.com Inc. to expand the presence of the iconic British spy in both theaters and its streaming platform, Prime Video, after years of impasse with the franchise heirs. Broccoli, a film and theater producer, and his half sister Wilson will remain as co-owners of the business, according to a statement announcing the deal on Thursday. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
The agreement marks the end of the absolute control of the Broccoli family over the franchise. Barbara’s father, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, was one of the original producers of James Bond films and passed the command of her producer to her and Wilson in 1995. Since Dr. No, released in 1963, the 007 films accumulated almost $ 8 billion at a global box office.
“With my career in 007 extending for almost 60 years amazing, I am moving away from the production of James Bond films to focus on artistic and philanthropic projects,” Wilson said in the statement. “Barbara and I agree that it’s time for our trustworthy partner, Amazon MGM Studios, bring James Bond to the future.”
Amazon completed the acquisition of the historic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) studio in 2022 to $ 8.5 billion, a move to expand its streaming catalog. MGM, which has always housed the James Bond franchise, brought to Amazon a robust collection with over 4,000 movies and 17,000 TV series, which can be offered at Prime Video or Freevee, free service with ad support.
The acquisition also assured Amazon the distribution rights of all James Bond films.
