Number of unemployed in employment centers rises 4.3% in January

The increase took place in all regions of the country, with the exception of the Azores and Madeira, being the Alentejoa region of the country where unemployment rose the most compared to January 2024.

The total number of unemployed entries in the employment centers rose 4.3% in January, in homologous terms, and 4.1% compared to December, to 349,338, according to data released by the Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP).

According to the IEFP, in late January were registered in the employment services of mainland Portugal and in the autonomous regions 349,338 unemployed, “number that represents 71.9% of a total of 486 002 employment requests”.

Compared to January last year, there are another 14,285 unemployedwhile in the face of December the increase was 13,673 people.

In relation to the same month of last year, and for absolute variation, there were also registered for less than 12 months (9,957), those looking for a new employment (11,233) and adults (11,199).

Regarding professional groups with greater expression, compared to the same period, IEFP highlights unqualified workers (29.3%), personal, security protection workers and salespeople (20.7%), administrative staff ( 10.8%) and experts from intellectual and scientific activities (10.2%).

In the homologous comparison, the IEFP also pointed out the increase in unqualified workers (10.5%), experts in intellectual and scientific activities (8%) and operators of installations and machines and workers of assembly (8%).

In the opposite direction, there was a reduction in unemployment in the professional groups of administrative personnel (-3.3%) and farmers and qualified workers of agriculture, fishing and forest (-17%).

Unemployment on the continent had an increase of 6.3%in January, in homologous terms, unlike the record in the Autonomous Regions of Madeira (-8.7%) and Azores (-3.1%).

In late January, job offers for satisfying totaling 11,063, increasing 3.2% in homologous terms and 14.6% in chain.

By the month, IEFP received 11,855 employment offers (17.6% as in the same month last year and 91.1% as in December), having made 7,770 places (growth of 2% in homologous terms and from 73.3% in chain.
