Country seeks to strengthen its National AI Center in response to US export restrictions
It announced it on Monday (17.FEV.2025) plans to acquire 10,000 high -performance GPUS (Graphic Processing Units) units by the end of 2025. The goal is to strengthen the country’s National AI Computing Center.
The interim president of South Korea, Choi Sang-Mok, highlighted the importance of public-private cooperation for the acquisition of GPUs. He stressed the intensification of competitions for supremacy in the AI industry.
The initiative arises in response to new United States regulations, which implemented restrictions on GPUS export. These measures affect the overall distribution of advanced AI technologies. South Korea, along with 18 other countries, is exempt from restrictions. However, about 120 countries will face limitations. Nations such as Iran, China and Russia are prohibited from acquiring these technologies.
The South Korean government will still decide which GPU products to purchase. Details about budget, GPU models and participating private companies will be completed by September 2025.
The demand for GPUS has grown exponentially. This is mainly due to the advances in Generative AI and accelerated computing. NVIDIA, a US company, leads the GPUS global market with about 80% share. Intel and AMD are their competitors.
OpenAi, supported by Microsoft, plans to reduce the dependence of Nvidia. The company is developing its own IA silicon generation. Technology will feed innovations such as Chatbot ChatgPT.
