Beijing (Reuters)-Chinese startup will publicly make the code of its models publicly, announced on Friday (21), reinforcing its commitment to the artificial intelligence of open source.

The company said in a publication on the social media platform X that it will open five source code repositories next week, describing the measure as “small but sincere progress,” which will be shared “with total transparency.”

“These humble building blocks in our online service were documented, implemented and tested on the field in production,” said the publication.

DeepSek shook the global AI industry last month when it launched its Open Source R1 reasoning model, which rivaled western performance systems and was developed at a lower cost.

The commitment of the company to open source distinguished it from most AI companies in China, which, like their rivals in the US, lean into closed code models. DeepSek’s discreet founder Liang Wenfeng said in a rare interview with a Chinese medium last July that the company did not prioritize the marketing of its AI models and that there was Soft Power to be obtained with open source.

“Having others following your innovation gives a great sense of realization,” Liang said in July.

“In fact, the open source is more cultural than commercial behavior, and contribute to it brings us respect,” he added.

The newly released open source code will provide infrastructure to support AI models DeepSeek has already publicly shared, based on existing open source models structures.

The announcement was made after DeepSeek launched a new algorithm called Native Sparse Attention (NSA), designed to make long-efficient training and long context inference.

Deepseek user base has exploded since last month. In China, it is the most popular chatbot service, with 22.2 million daily active users on January 11, exceeding 16.95 million Douban users, according to AICPB.com, a Chinese site that tracks products of AI.
