The profile of customers who negotiate energy in the free market has been more heterogeneous in recent months, with the record of consumer migrations for this segment in 2024.

Some of the sectors that expanded participation in this market were retail, agribusiness and hospitals. By 2024, 93% of industrial energy consumption and 41% of the commercial were traded in the free market.

One of the main dynamics that changed with the migration of the last year was the demand for energy.

Free Market customer profile is more heterogeneous

Data released by the Electricity Commercialization Chamber (CCEE) showed that among the 26.8 thousand migrations that occurred in 2024, 92% have a load less than 500 kilowatts (kW). In the previous year, 67% consumed below this amount.

Market opening

In addition to the opening of the market that made it possible to enter this smaller consumer market, the focus of traders was directed to capture these customers.

Engie Brasil began preparation to serve smaller commercial consumers in 2018, already anticipating the new scenario.

One of the main reasons for joining the free hiring environment is the economy, but the stability of tariffs has also become one of the attractions, according to Engie’s director of energy marketing, Gabriel Mann.

The company has employed efforts to simplify hiring processes, with three standardized contract options for lower consumption customers.

“For small customers, I highlight here the guaranteed percentage economy option in relation to the distributor’s tariff, with less end customer exposure to short -term negotiations,” he said.

Migrate

As there was a change in the profile of migrations to the free hiring environment (ACL), Kinsol understood the movement and began to serve customers with a new behavioral profile.

According to Kinsol CEO Maurício Crivelin, there is still no deep knowledge on the part of small consumers.

“Those who paid there over $ 80,000, already knew what was free market, he already had a guy doing analysis there. The owner of a small trade in Group A, has only been approached now to talk about migration. There will still be a period of maturation, there will still be his period to understand and study, ”he said.

CRIVELIN understands that there is already further clarification by the population about micro and distributed minigeration (MMGD), a model in which the consumer generates his own energy.

Next step

The next stage of market liberalization will be the opening of the free market to all consumers, including those in the low voltage network, such as residential.

The biggest adherence by small customers is another step for the full opening process of the free market, in the view of the partner of the Stima Energy Daniela Alcaro.

The trader is focused on the wholesale market and deals with large energy consumers. Even so, Alcaro understands that in these two years of opening there was a good preparation for the possibility of migration of residential consumers.

“Only political will is lacking. Being very clear, I think Congress is missing to look at this, the Ministry of Mines and Energy Prioritize, I think CCEE has said more than time it is prepared to open the low voltage. I think it has been proven that the opening of low voltage will create a competitive environment among energy suppliers, providing lower prices for the free consumer, ”he said.
