The National Maritime Authority (AMN) and the Navy warned of “a considerable aggravation” of the weather and maritime agitation in northern mainland Portugal, since 00:00 this Friday and until 12:00 pm on Saturday.
“Maritime agitation will be characterized by a ripple from the West-Noroeste quadrant, with a significant height that can reach seven meters and a maximum height of 13 meters, with an average period ranging from 16 to 17 seconds,” they indicated The Navy and AMN in a statement.
Winds from the Sul-Sudoeste quadrant, with an average intensity of up to 65 kilometers/hour (km/h) and gusts up to 117 km/h are foreseen.
The two entities warn “the entire maritime community and the general population” about the care to be taken, “either in the preparation of a going to the sea, and when they are in the sea or in coastal zones”, including the need to reinforce the ties and maintain a tight surveillance of the vessels attracted and founded.
Another advice from these maritime organizations is to “avoid walks by sea or in areas exposed to sea agitation”, which are an example of port protection jetties, cliffs or beaches, in order to avoid being surprised by a wave.
“Not practicing the activity of playful fishing, especially along with cliffs and cliffs of Arriba often affected by the surrounding waves, always being aware that under these conditions the sea can easily reach seemingly safe areas,” they also advise.
According to the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), seven districts of mainland Portugal will be on Friday, starting at 12:00, under orange warning (the second most serious on a scale of three) due to agitation Strong sea, namely Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga, with the forecast of “western/northwest waves with five to six meters, and may reach 10 meters high”.
On Saturday, these seven districts and three others, FaroSetúbal and Beja will be under yellow warning (the least severe on a scale of three) due to the forecast of maritime agitation, where “four to five meters” waves are expected, according to the IPMA.
By precipitation, with “rainy periods, sometimes strong”, the institute issued a yellow warning to Friday in nine of the 18 districts-Bragança, Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga.
Also for Friday, there is yellow warning due to the forecast of wind for the districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga.
Yellow warning is issued by whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the weather situation, while orange warning is issued whenever there is a moderate to high risk meteorological situation.
