Portimão celebrates the carnival again with a set of initiatives ranging from balls and matinés to parades and allegorical processions, ensuring moments of fun for everyone, in a party with a strong popular.
This year, the celebration will have as its theme “sustainability”, promoting the importance of responsible consumption that allows to satisfy human needs in the present and future. The parade will feature 13 floats and nine carnival groups, bringing a lot of music and revelry to the city streets.
The festivities start on February 18, between 10:00 and 11:30, with the great opening parade, starring the children of the schools of the county, who will parade masked through the streets of Portimão. The route will start at Praça da República, passing by Rua Right towards Largo 1st of May. The animation will be in charge of the Bombémia Group – Percussion Group of the University of Minho.
Carnival balls, known for stimulating the creativity of revelers and bringing to life the festive spirit of the time, are held in various places of the city and on the following dates:
- Cultural and Sports Association of DECEMBER 1st of December – March 1, 3 and 4 (balls at 21:00) and March 2 (Matiné at 18:00);
- Good Hope Atlético Clube Portimonense – March 1 and 3 (dances at 21:30);
- Mexilhoeirense Instruction and Recreation Club – March 4 (Matiné at 17:00);
- Sports Club and Recreational of Pedra Mourinha – March 1 and 3 (dances at 21:30);
- União Portimonense Club – March 2 (20:00, “Assault” and Masquerade Contest) and March 3 (Ball at 21:00);
- Sporting Glory or Death Portimonense – February 15 and 22, 1, 3 and 4 March (balls at 21:00);
- Figueirense Recreational Society – March 2 (Matiné at 17:00) and March 4 (Matiné at 18:00);
- Portimonense winning society – March 1 and 3 (balls at 21:30) and March 4 (Matiné at 18:00).
The highlight of the festivities will be on March 4, at 15:00, with the Floor Parade in the Portimão riverside area. The procession will feature 13 vehicles decorated with themes alluding to sustainability and the participation of nine collectivities, in a parade marked by music, color and animation. The tradition of Entrudo gains life, with the spontaneity and energy of local associations to be the highlight of the Tuesday afternoon of Carnival.

With a program full of animation, Portimão invites residents and visitors to celebrate Carnival with revelry and joy, because – as the people say – “Life is two days and Carnival are three.”
