Lago Neuron, Albania – the largest known underground thermal lake in the world
The largest underground thermal lake in the world was discovered in Albania, at the bottom of an abyss over 100 meters.
The lake Neuronin southern Albania, it was first found in 2021.
At that time, the Czech Republic investigators team did not have the appropriate instruments to measure it; and did not come to the conclusion that it was largest underground thermal lake in the world.
Three years later, the team returned to the lake that measures 138 meters long and 42 m wide and confirmed that the hidden water mass is the largest of its gender known to science.
As it counts, the hidden camera was first discovered in explorations in the border region between Albania and Greece, which has been subject to political tensions for over a century. For this reason, this zone has been out of the boundaries of some investigations.

The investigators descended to the well and found an extensive cave system, including some with thermal springs and one containing a vast lake, said Marek Audy expedition leader in Neuron Foundation.

The new results indicated that the lake has 8,335 cubic meters of water, the equivalent of about 3.5 Olympic Pools.
As Live Science remembers in 2008, a neuron -like (but smaller) underground thermal lake was found in Hungary. This lake and its chamber, discovered under the Turkish baths in the Budapest capital, were “the largest cave and active and water -filled thermal hall in the world” at the time they were found.
