Farmers fear that the agreement would bring many cheap duty -free foods to Europe.

Within the European Union, France is still trying to create a “blocking minority” to prevent a trade agreement with a group of South American countries. French President Emmanuel Macron said this on Saturday, TASR reports according to AFP report.

The European Commission recently signed a trade agreement with Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay). According to her chief Ursula von Der Leyen, it will be a “double -sided” cooperation. However, according to AFP, the agreement is criticized by farmers across Europe and some countries, including France, Poland and Italy, have also expressed dissatisfaction.

Farmers in Europe are afraid that the agreement with South American countries will lead to the import of cheap duty -free food on the EU market. According to them, these countries grow crops and breed animals under much simpler conditions than peasants in the EU.

The signature of the agreement does not mean that it is definitely accepted. It must be ratified in the EU Council where some countries may try to create a blocking minority. It must also be approved by the European Parliament.
