The governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (Union), announced on Saturday, 22, that he intends to run for the Presidency of the Republic in the 2026 elections. In a publication in X (former Twitter), the head of the Goian executive, who competes in a position in Right of the political spectrum, he reported that the event of launching his pre-candidacy for the Planalto Palace is scheduled for April 4 in Salvador (BA).
“I count on you on this walk through a fairer, prosperous, safe and strong country! Let’s go together! ”Says the governor on the social network. With the announcement, Caiado officially positions himself as one of the names on the right in the next race for the presidency.
Since last year’s municipal elections, the governor of Goiás seeks to put himself as a right-wing alternative to pockets, vying for the estate of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who is ineligible and under the sight of the Supreme Court (STF) , after denunciation of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) who puts him as a “leader” of the coup plot after defeat at the polls in 2022.
In the dispute for the capital of Goiás, in 2024, Caiado supported Sandro Mabel (Union), who beat Fred Rodrigues (PL), with 55.53% of the valid votes against 44.47%. The election in Goiânia placed Caiado against Bolsonaro and, during the elections, the former president even called the governor “coward”.
Although he announced his pre-candidacy, Caiado is also ineligible for eight years due to abuse of political power in the past municipal election. In addition, the Electoral Court of Goiás revoked the registration of the plate of the elected mayor of Goiânia, Sandro Mabel, who received the support of Caiado in the dispute for the command of the capital. As the decision is of first instance, both Caiado and Mabel still have the possibility of appealing.
