How the Saudi League works
Football is the modern sport with the most supporters in Saudi Arabia. The sport arrived in the country in the twentieth century, influenced by foreigners who went to work and settled in the Arab country.
An important step for the growth of football in the country was the creation of the Saudi Arabia Football Federation (SAFF), organizer of the three main championships: Saudi Championship, Prince Cup and King Cup.
The “Saudião”, as the Saudi Football Championship is known, brings together 18 clubs and works in the running points system. At the end of the season, three teams are relegated and the first three qualify for the Champions League of Asia.
In addition to the first division, the championship has three other series: the Prince Mohammad Bin Salman (equivalent to the second division), the second and third division (in practice, third and fourth divisions).
The Saudi League was professionalized in 2007, but began to gain spotlight by 2023, from the funding of the Saudi Public Investment Fund, one of the world’s largest state -owned assets, estimated at $ 500 billion.
The instrument acquired 75% of the capital of Al Nassr, Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli, four of the main Saudi clubs.
Change in the limit of foreigners in Saudi football
In the 2024/25 season, which began in August, the Saudi Football Federation has expanded the number of foreigners allowed in the country’s competitions, from eight to ten non -Saudi players.
Another change in line with the desire of more young athletes in the country is the addition of two more foreign players born from 2003.
