The 17 -year -old Russian teenage tennis player, Mirra Andreeva, became the youngest champion of a WTA 1000 by defeating the Danish Clara Tauson (38th) in the Dubai tournament final.

Andreeva, who won the opponent 7-6 (7/1) and 6-1 and will rise to 9th place in the world ranking, is the first 17-year-old player to enter the top 10 since Czech Nicole Vaidisova in 2007.

Created in 2009, the WTA 1000 category brings together the ten most prestigious tournaments in women’s tennis after the four Grand Slam (Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and US Open).

Never before a tennis player under 19 had won a WTA 1000.

The record of precocity among the champions of a WTA 1000 belonged to the current number 3 of the world, Coco Gauff, who raised the trophy in Cincinnati with just over 19 years and a half in 2023.

Semifinalist of the last Roland Garros, where he had defeated the world’s current number 1 in the quarterfinals, Aryna Sabalenka (then number 2), the young Russian beat Polish Iga Swiatek in her trajectory towards triumph in the United Arab Emirates.

Andreeva, trained by former Spanish tennis player Conchita Martínez, won the second career title in Dubai after winning a more modest tournament, that of Iasi (Romania) in 2024.

The Russian also won the silver medal at the Paris Olympics with her double partner Diana Shnaider.
