Algarve Health: Challenges that require answers | Editorial

Health in the Algarve continues to face structural challenges, from the lack of family doctors, through the deficit in vaccination coverage to the pressure of tourism in the NHS. These problems require effective and urgent solutions, especially in a region where the population grows exponentially in summer.

Flu vaccination: good performance, but still insufficient

The influenza vaccination rate in the Algarve reached 80.6% among those over 65 years old, an above national average, but below the 75% target of the World Health Organization (). The president of the Portuguese Association of General and Family Medicine, Nuno Jacinto, stressed that “the numbers speak for themselves” as to the importance of medical recommendation for adherence to the vaccine, but warned that Portugal can do more to achieve the goals.

Lack of doctors in the Algarve: a persistent problem

The lack of doctors remains one of the biggest concerns. In Alcoutim, there is only one doctor, when at least two would be needed for a suitable minimum service, according to the mayor, Paulo Paulino. In Monchique, despite municipal incentives that cover 80% of the cost of housing of doctors, there are still users without a family doctor. The president of the municipality, Paulo Alves, reinforces the need for another doctor to respond to the population.

SNS pressed by tourism

The Algarve is one of the regions where the collection of health care to non -insurance foreigners becomes unfeasible, according to Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins. Between 2021 and 2024, about 139,000 foreigners were served in the NHS without any financial coverage, increasing the pressure on the public system.

The deputy of the arrival, Rui Cristina, warned that “health tourism threatens the sustainability of the system”, as many foreigners benefit from care without any counterpart.

Exonerations in health and costs for the Algarve

The dismissal of the administration of the Local Health Unit (ULS) of the Algarve generated controversy. The former SNS executive director, Fernando Araújo, denounced that there were no changes in management, but a high cost. According to him, compensation may exceed 500 thousand euros, arguing that the Court of Auditors should evaluate the situation.

The Algarve needs effective policies to ensure the fixation of doctors, improve hospital management and ensure sustainable SNS financing in the region. Health cannot be a privilege – it must be a guaranteed right to everyone.
