(Bloomberg) – Pope Francis rested and had a quiet night, the Vatican said on Sunday morning, in an apparent setback in his one week battle against pneumonia.
The 88 -year -old pontiff was described as being “critical state” after having an extended asthmatic respiratory crisis on Saturday, which required high flows of oxygen. He also received a blood transfusion after tests showed conditions associated with anemia, the Vatican said. The prognosis is “reserved,” he added.
Doctors said on Friday that the Pope’s condition does not represent immediate threat to his life, although he remains at risk and is not out of danger, adding that he will remain hospitalized for at least another week.
Francisco was hospitalized after what doctors called an increasingly complex health problem. The Vatican said he was suffering from pneumonia in both lungs and that the medical team had altered their drug regime to combat the infection.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Francisco is the spiritual leader of the world’s Roman Catholics since 2013. He has been the first Pope of the Americas and the first non -European pontiff since the eighth century.
