The Ukrainian community in Brazil organizes demonstrations in several cities against the Russian invasion in Ukraine. The events were scheduled to take place from February 22-24, 2025, in places such as Salvador, Curitiba, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The objective is to highlight the continuity of attacks and the importance of international support to the country.

The war, which began 3 years ago, on February 24, 2022, resulted in the occupation of 1/5 of the Ukrainian territory. The number of dead is uncertain: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (Servant of the People, Center) said that more than 46,000 soldiers have been killed since the beginning of the war, and “Tens of thousands of civilians”. It is not known the amount of Russia’s dead.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Brazil highlighted the need for Brazilian support. “Brazil must be on the right side of history, Brazil must be next to Ukraine. Ukraine needs support to have a lasting peace, without the constant threat of Russian attacks ”said in a publication on Facebook.

The statements of the President (PT), who supported Russian leader Vladimir Putin and attributed to Ukraine a responsibility shared by the conflict, caused controversy. Lula criticized the United States for not including Ukraine and the European Union in the negotiations of a possible ceasefire, especially after the election of US President Donald Trump (Republican).

The acts will include a mass for peace in Ukraine in São Paulo, support manifestations in Curitiba, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and a performance at the Terreiro de Jesus in Salvador. These events aim to honor the victims of the conflict, support the liberation of Ukrainian prisoners, the return of kidnapped children and holding Russian war criminals.

The recent meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, who sought to start dialogues to resolve the conflict without including Ukrainian negotiators, generated dissatisfaction in Ukraine and among its European allies.
