Friedrich Merz can become the new chancellor, marking the return of the Christian Democratic Union party to power

The Central-right CDU (Democratic Union) CDU (Democratic Union) leads the polls of ballot box in Germany in the elections that take place this Sunday (23.FEV.2025). According to The mirrorthe CDU/CSU coalition obtained 29% of the votes, indicating a victory for Friedrich Merz, which could become the new chancellor of the country.

The result signals a return to the power of the party of former Chancellor Angela Merkel after a period under the leadership of Olaf Schlz (SPD, Center left). AFD (alternative to Germany), known as conservative right -wing positions, reached 19.5% of the votes, almost bending its support since the last elections in 2021. The advance positions the party as the 2nd largest political force in the country elections.

In these elections, the (German parliament) will be reduced to 630 seats. Until 2024, there were 733 chairs in the legislature. Parties need to win at least 5% of the votes to enter and participate in government formation. Research indicates that the Christian Democratic Union will need a coalition – I in accordance with other parties – to form a majority government in Berlin.
