There were 133 km² deforested, an area equivalent to over 400 soccer fields; most affected region is Mato Grosso, with 45% of the entire devastated area
The NO registered a significant increase of 68% in January 2025, compared to the same month of the previous year. According to data from the Amazon Institute of Man and Environment, 133 km² were deforested, the equivalent of over 400 soccer fields. The state of Mato Grosso leads the deforestation ranking, representing 45% of the devastated area, followed by Roraima with 23% and Pará with 20%. The institute warns of the need to intensify inspection and monitoring actions in the region.
The Amazon, rich in biodiversity, faces challenges not only with deforestation, but also with illegal mining, illegal extraction of wood and trafficking. The government of the president, who has the environment as one of his flags, announced last year a contribution of funds to the region, in partnership with French President Emmanuel Macron.
However, recent data indicate difficulties in containing deforestation. This problem is not exclusive to the current management, but has been persisted for years, with spikes of deforestation recorded in 2015 and 2022, during the governments of Dilma Rousseff and Jair Bolsonaro, respectively.
