Chemical engineer Letícia de Souza Patrus Pena, 31, has been hospitalized for five months in total coma after receiving a anesthesia known as “block” for back pain. The procedure was done at the house of the anesthetist and childhood friend of the engineer, Natalia Peixoto de Azevedo Kalil, in Belo Horizonte.

The doctor had performed the same procedure in Leticia in August 2024. The two scheduled another application on September 20 of the same year, and that was when Leticia suffered cardiorespiratory arrest and serious brain injuries.
Leticia’s mother, Flávia Bicalho, says that her daughter’s friend was slow to help. “The error began with the application, which could not have been done at home. But there were other errors that also worsened the condition of Lê: help, for example, was totally inappropriate. She waited for her husband and brother -in -law to get home and drove to the car to the hospital, ”says the mother.
The mother later found that the procedure could not have been performed at home. According to the package leaflet applied in Leticia, the procedure should happen in hospital units with resuscitation equipment.
Flávia says Natália has never sought her family to offer assistance or have news from the state of health of Leticia, who has been hospitalized in a hospital ever since. The family made a criminal complaint at MPMG, Nova Lima County
The Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Minas Gerais (CRM-MG) informed the open procedures run under confidentiality, as provided for in the Code of Ethical-Professional Procedure. The report sought the health professional, but had no return.
