Finnish President Alexander Stubb expressed support for Kiev on Monday in an interview with Reuters and presented a vision of a peace plan in connection with the war in Ukraine. He said that if Russia wins this war, the United States will also be on the defeated side, TASR writes.

“In the war in Ukraine, it is not only about Ukrainian independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity – it is European security and American leadership,” said the stubb in Kiev. “We have just doubled the NATO borders with Russia. We have one of the largest armies in Europe. We have always increased defense spending for an apparent reason, and that is not the reason not Stockholm, but Moscow,” he said.

“If there is even a hint that Putin will win this peace, then the United States will lose, so I think we have to fight to the bitter end,” The stubb answered the question of what his legacy would be to US President Trump.

Trump recently challenged the existing US military commitments to NATO and accused Europe of not inventing its fair share in defense. “The United States, I think right, place some requirements on Europe to take more responsibility for its own security… it is time for Europeans to stand on their feet and have some of their skin in the game, “Trump said.

Stubb in an interview with Reuters submitted his peace plan for Ukraine, which he divided into several phases. The first would be preliminary strengthening of Ukraine and pressure on Russia, the second ceasefire with security guarantees for Ukraine, which would support Europe and cover it by the US. The third would be a peace process that would discuss issues such as territory, finance and renewal.

When asked about the potential role of Finland in a possible peaceful operation in Ukraine, the Finnish President said it was still too early to talk about the deployment of military forces. “In any case, I’d much like to see drones in the air. So I think European support will basically come more from the air and the sea than from the ground. ”Stubb also found that Ukraine membership in the EU and NATO is a matter of course.
