Fire reaches 5 protected areas and authorities warn to intensify the climate crisis
Multiple fire outbreaks reach 5 regions of Patagonia Argentina, including national parks Lanin, Nahuel Huapi, El Bolsón, Trevelin and Los Alerces. Part of the fires are located near the tourist city of Bariloche. The information is from portals and .
The fires started in December and the situation has worsened in recent weeks. Lanin National Park in Neuquén records the largest affected area, with 22,131 hectares. In Nahuel Huapi National Park in Black Río, the fire has already destroyed 12,072 hectares, the second last report of the National Park. In El Bolsón, the affected area amounts to 3,825.45 hectares, as reported by the Government of Río Negro.
A new fire was recorded on Saturday (22.Fev.2025) at Cerro Meta, located inside Nahuel Huapi National Park in Bariloche, and about 900 meters from a highway. According to Bariloche authorities, the fire affects an area of approximately 1 hectare in an area that is difficult to reach. Another focus of fire appeared in Cerro Ventana, also in Bariloche, but was quickly controlled thanks to the rains that fell in the region.
Six aircraft worked in controlling the flames that are still active in the Cerro Meta. The fires were considered “uncontrolled”By Nelson Leal, from Splif (acronym for forest fire prevention and fighting service).
In Chubut, the provincial fire management service reported that the flames consumed 1,715 hectares in the Trevelin region. Authorities managed to contain outbreaks in Epuyén, El Pedregoso and Puerto Madryn. In Los Alerces Park, 2 intentional fire outbreaks came together, forcing the closure of trails.
Fire fighting in the region has cooperation between Argentina and Chile. In Lanin Park, the Secretary of Emergencies and Risk Management, Luciana Ortiz Luna, cited the presence of 16 air assets, including a Chilean Airbus helicopter with a capacity of 3,500 liters of water – the largest deployment of history in the region.
The National Fire Management Service performed only 22% of the budget scheduled for 2024, a reduction of 81% compared to 2023, according to a survey of the organization checked with data from the National Budget Workshop. In session in the Senate, Senator Silvina García Larraburu of Black Río, criticized Argentina President Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanza, right), by “abandon the Patagonia”, Citing over 300 affected homes and 1,000 evacuated in El Bolsón.
In El Bolsón, the fire is “circumscribed”Without advancement of fire, but teams maintain cooling and surveillance work to avoid reactivation. Authorities await the arrival of expected rainfall for the next few days, which may assist in fighting the flames.
