Volcanic Maars often leave wide craters that are filled with groundwater. However, There are no ways of volcanic relief known in the vicinity of the Savonoski crater.
Furthermore, There are no signs of a source of magma under the hole. A potential volcanic origin for the crater remains, therefore, mysterious.

Scientists agree that Savonoski crater is either an impact crater of meteorites or a volcanic maar.
However, definitive answer will only come with a much more extensive investigation. AND It’s not easy.
As Live Science recalls, it is known that the crater suffered at least one glaciation event since its formation.
This means that was swallowed by an ice layer when the glaciers last covered the southwest of Alaska23,000-14,700 years ago.
