Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump agreed: The ceasefire in Ukraine is possible in a few weeks

The French President stressed the need to involve Ukraine in peace talks and called for a fair competition between the US and the EU

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday after meeting with White House boss Donald Trump in Washington that a ceasefire in Ukraine could take place in the coming weeks. According to the French leader, there are concrete talks about the plan to achieve a permanent peace in which Ukraine will also be involved, TASR reports according to AFP and DPA.

After the meeting, Trump also expressed the belief that the war could end up in “a few weeks”. However, the French President stressed that any agreed peace could not mean the surrender of Ukraine.

Macron hopes for the US involvement in securing any peaceful solution in Ukraine, but stressed his attitude that Kiev should be part of the war interviews. He also promised Trump that Europe is ready to increase spending on its defense.

Both leaders have also discussed the trade, because Donald Trump has been threatening to impose duties from the European Union, China, Canada or Mexico since he took office.

During the press conference, Macron called on Trump for a “fair competition” and noted that US and European economies are deeply linked. He also urged to increase investment on both sides.

Later, in an interview with Fox News Macron, he criticized Trump’s plans to introduce duties on several fronts. “Come on. You cannot wage a business war with China and Europe at the same time, “Macron said. He hopes to convince an American colleague during a personal interview.

Macron met Trump as the first European leader during his second term. Both presidents participated in the video conference with the G7 leaders. The French president was satisfied with the meeting and described it as “very good (a) very friendly”.
