CDU/CSU leader Friedrich Merz expressed hope for an agreement to change the EU asylum policy, but at the same time emphasized the need for immediate steps in Germany.
The leader of the CDU/CSU block, which won on Sunday in the German parliamentary elections, stressed a controversial political demand before the expected coalition interviews with the Central Social Democrats (SPD). According to Merza, such a German policy would be in accordance with the European Union law if it acted as a temporary measure. “None of us wants to close the borders,” Merz said. But he also stressed that it is necessary to restore control of people entering the country, the DPA.
Merz also expressed the hope that EU leaders will agree on changes in the common asylum policy that could bring reasonable solutions since 2026, but according to a German politician it is necessary to act immediately. “We can’t wait until then,” Merz said. “We urgently have to do something,” he said.
At the same time, the head of the German conservative block added that he believes that the SPD will eventually be able to convince the “common journey”.
