Moncarapacho Carnival celebrates 126 years with parades and masquerade dances

The Carnival of Moncarapacho, the oldest in the Algarve, returns on 2 (Sunday) and 4 (Tuesday) March for its 126th edition, promising a vibrant event, full of color and tradition. Known as the Battle of Flowersthis carnival stands out for its strong community participation in the creation of floats and in the making of traditional paper flowers that decorate them.

With 12 floats and about 700 extras, the parade, which takes place between 15:00 and 18:00, will bring iconic characters from the children’s imagination, such as Asterix & Obélix, Shrek, Zorro and Super Mario. In addition, there will be an appeal to world peace and the recreation of the ST. Patrick’s Day, the famous Irish parade.

The event has free admission and is organized by, with the support of the municipality of Olhão and Sumol+Compal, with the active collaboration of the local population.

Carnival Balls at the People’s House of Moncarapacho

For those who want to extend the revelry, the House of the People of Moncarapacho hosts masquerade balls, from 22:00, starting on February 28 (Friday), with Ruben Filipe. The dances continue with the shades of ball, on March 1, Luís Filipe French (day 2), duo reflex (day 3) and end with Cristiano Martins, on March 4, with the ‘burial of the entreda’.

With a mix of tradition, music and creativity, the Carnival of Moncarapacho promises to delight visitors and residents, consolidating itself as one of the most emblematic events of the Algarve.
