US President Donald Trump took a “complete” rupture with the “very stupid” American diplomacy “of the past” while French homologous Emmanuel Macron has assumed “good reasons” to renew dialogue with Vladimir Putin.
Trump and Macron spoke at the White House at a press conference after a bilateral meeting on the day of three years of the beginning of the Russian invasionand while direct contacts take place between Washington and Moscow on a peace agreement in Ukraine, excluding the European bloc and Kiev.
“My administration is completely breaking with the previous administration’s foreign policy values and, frankly, from the past. I campaigned against a very stupid foreign policy regime,” said the US President.
Macron admitted that Trump had “good reasons” to renew dialogue with Vladimir Putinwhile appealed to “American support” in case of sending European soldiers to Ukraine.
“There are good reasons for President Trump to resume dialogue with President Putin,” Macron said.
The French President emphasized that Achieving peace should not mean the “surrender” of Ukrainebut allow the sovereignty of that country invaded by Russia in February 2022.
“This peace should not mean a surrender of Ukraine. It should not mean a ceasefire without guarantees. It should allow Ukrainian sovereignty and allow it to negotiate with other stakeholders on the issues that affect it,” he said.
