As a peace planned by the US and Russia for Ukraine is outlined, doubts rise upon an equally threatened territory: Taiwan.
Donald Trump abruptly changed US politics from Ukraine: alongside Putin, he outlines the peacekeepers he wants.
The US President has already stated that Kiev “should never have started war,” said Ukraine “could become Russian one day” and called “dictator” to Zelenskyy, in a clear approach to Vladimir Putin’s foreign policy.
Russia was, like China, the US “pet enemy”. But now, doubts are raised about the position where Ukraine will be, which Trump demands to grant the US.
Still, there is a new and well possible victim on the horizon, with the turn of Trump’s foreign policy: the Taiwan.
USA can “pull the rug”
This Asian country has faced the threat of invasion of China for decades. Such with Russia does with Ukraine, China claims the Taiwan territory. You US has long been financed the country with means of defense.
According to US law forces the US to provide sufficient Taiwan hardware and technology to avoid invasion, but maintains a “strategic ambiguity” policy about being in defense of Taiwan if the country was invaded.
Peter Hegseth, the US Secretary of Defense, said earlier this month that if Americans took support from Ukraine, it would be to focus on the Asia Pacific region. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also stressed the “importance of maintaining Peace and Stability in Taiwan Strait as an indispensable element of security and prosperity for the international community. ”
But according to analysts, the game may be about to move to the small island that has already belonged to China.
What happens in Ukraine, happens in Taiwan
A, Russell Hsia, executive director of the global Taiwan Institute, says that “Taiwan has spent most of the last three years to argue that the fate of democracies has been closely linked and that what happens to Ukraine affects Otaiwan.”
“With the apparently abrupt change in the US position on the war in Ukraine,” said Hsiao, “this could have the effect of getting some in Taiwan to ask if the United States could pull the rug under them. ”
“The perspective of the United States trying to make a deal with Russia over Ukraine, without actually giving Ukraine a place at the table, will reinforce the feeling of CAmerican ethicism in Taiwan“Adds Marcin Jerzewski, head of the Taiwan office of the European Value Center for Security Policy.
A “dangerous approach”
But according to experts, China is unlikely to interpret the US’s apparent availability to give up Ukrainian territory as an opening to the Taiwan invasion.
“It is more likely that US administration is trying to get Ukraine out of the way, making it a European problem to face China from a relatively stronger position,” says the USAn Graham analyst to Ap. “I think it’s a dangerous approachdue to the terrible precedent that opens. But it is unlikely to be repeated with China. ”
