The Republican President revoked a decree issued by its democratic predecessor that required the guarantee that weapons sold abroad would not be used in violation of international humanitarian law, the Washington Post said last Monday (25). The revocation of the order, issued in February 2024 by Joe Biden amid the controversy over the Israeli offensive in was described as “excellent news” by Republican Senator Jim Risch, president of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

The previous government, under pressure from democratic congressmen who denounced the use of American weapons by Israel in Gaza, asked countries that they received military assistance “credible and reliable” that they would respect human rights. The order, known as NSM-20, led to the publication of a controversial report in May 2024 criticizing the use of American weapons by Israel without suspending its delivery.

Although it was “reasonable to believe” that Israel would have used weapons incompatible with international humanitarian law, the United States did not reach definitive “conclusions” due to insufficient information, the report said. The report also analyzed arms remittances to Colombia, Iraq, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia and Ukraine.

The decree that inspired the report was revoked, according to the Washington Post, which cites “several” sources close to the US government and a memorandum of the National Security Counselor Michael Waltz. Senator Jim Risch criticized the sole objective text to satisfy “the progressive left” and “embarrass our ally Israel” and that “reducing the security of the United States and its allies.”

“The only thing the Trump administration does by revoking NSM-20 is to send a signal to the United States allies that the government simply does not care about how American weapons are used, no matter how illegal or immoral it Be it, ”he told Washington Post Christopher Le Mon, in charge of the State Department’s Human Rights in the Joe Biden government.
