Census: Brazilians with higher education does not reach 20%, despite the advance

From 2000 to 2022, the portion of the Brazilian population that reached the higher education almost tripled, a jump of 6.8% to 18.4%. Despite the advance, the percentage is not even 20% of the total inhabitants of 25 years or older in Brazil, according to preliminary data from the Census 2022released this Wednesday (26) by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

On the other hand, the percentage of people without instruction or without completing elementary school fell from 63.2% to 35.2%.

In addition, the population in this age group with “medium and superior incomplete” level has grown from 16.3% to 32.2% between 2000 and 2022, while people with “full and medium incompletely elementary” went from 12.8% to 14%.

The census also highlights racial inequalities in access to Brazilian higher education. In 2000, the portion of the brown population (25 years or older) with higher level was 2.4%; And of the black people was 2.1%.

Although in 2022 – 5.2 times for browns (12.3%) and 5.8 times for blacks (11.7%) – the portion of White population with higher education is greater: 9.9% in 2000 with an increase to 25.8% by 2022.

Among women 25 years or older, 20.7% had, a proportion that among men of the same age group was only 15.8%, according to the survey.

The proportion of the population 25 years or older and with an incomplete fundamental was 37.3% among men and 33.4% among women.
