Who can order the funeral subsidy?
According to Social Security, this provision may request the people who:
- Whether they are resident in Portugal or equivalent to residents, or belong to a country with which Portugal has an agreement for such situations;
- Prove that they effectively supported expenses with the funeral;
- They are not entitled to death subsidy.
In addition, the deceased must have been resident in Portugal for the request to be accepted.
Social Security stresses that “this subsidy cannot be accumulated with the death allowance or the reimbursement of funeral expenses.”

What is the amount assigned and deadlines to request?
The value of the funeral subsidy is set at € 261.25, paid in a single installment.
The request must be made “within six months from the first day of the month following the one in which death occurred.” If the death has been caused by third parties and there is a right to compensation for funeral expenses, the amount of the subsidy must be returned to social security.
