Lula fires Nisia and confirms Padilha as new Minister of Health

President Lula dismissed the Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, this Tuesday (25/2). It will be replaced in office by Alexandre Padilha (PT), current Minister of Institutional Relations.

The dismissal was communicated by Lula in a meeting with the minister at the Planalto Palace in the early afternoon. In addition to Nisia, Padilha himself participated in the meeting, according to the column.

For the place of Padilha at the Secretariat of Institutional Relations, one of the most rated names is that of the current leader of the government in the House, Deputy José Guimarães (PT-CE), according to the column.

Fried nisia

Nisia had been frying for Lula behind the scenes for at least two weeks. Last week, the president himself warned assistants that he would trade his health minister.

Nisia’s resignation occurred hours after she held her last event as a minister at Planalto alongside Lula: a ceremony to announce partnerships for vaccine production.

According to the column, Lula also had a meeting with Nisia before this event. The conversation was attended by other ministers, such as Rui Costa, from the Civil House.

Oswaldo Cruz Foundation’s competition official, Nisia had been a health minister since the beginning of the Lula administration in January 2023. His nomination was attributed to Padilha.

Padilha meets with allies

After being officially warned by Lula who will take over the Ministry of Health, Padilha returned to his office on the fourth floor of the Planalto and met with his main assistants.

Padilha will return to the Ministry of Health after more than 10 years. He was the holder of the folder between January 2011 and February 2014, the Dilma Rousseff government period.
