During the first meeting of the bloc leaders in 2025, the Brazilian chancellor defended the reform of multilateral institutions and the expansion of the use of local currencies among member countries
The Brazilian Chancellor, said on Tuesday (25) that he has the mission of establishing a new world order in the midst of geopolitical crises and tensions. He pointed out that the block plays a key role in creating a fairer and more inclusive system, as well as defending the reform of multilateral institutions and expanding the use of local currencies among member countries. During his speech, Vieira noted that the principles of multilateralism are being challenged by the current global conjuncture.
“In this evolving scenario, BRICS has a crucial role to play in promoting a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable world order. A multipolar world is not just an emerging reality. It’s a shared goal, ”said the minister.
He mentioned that institutions such as the IMF and the UN Security Council are having difficulty adapting to new realities, which makes a reform in global security architecture urgent. BRICS, which represents about 50% of world energy production and 39% of global GDP, recently underwent significant expansion, increasing from five to 11 members. This expansion was considered an important milestone for the block, which already houses almost half of the planet’s population.
Under the presidency of Brazil, the BRICS agenda includes the creation of a global governance for artificial intelligence, with the aim of preventing this technology from expanding existing inequalities. Vieira also emphasized the need to strengthen trade between the bloc’s countries and criticized the shortage of financing to adapt climate change, noting that climate justice should be a priority in international discussions.
Brazil, when assuming the presidency of BRICS, established six main priorities: global health, trade, investment and finance cooperation, combating climate change, artificial intelligence governance, reform of the multilateral system of peace and safety, and BRICS institutional development .
