The brand “Saberm the Algarve” was presented this Wednesday in Faro in the presence of primary producers and transformers of the food sector willing to promote the production and proximity consumption in the region, through sustainable practices.
“What we want with this brand is to group these small producers, but not only the small ones, also the big ones, using the strength of the Algarve brand itself,” said the vice president of the Coordination and Regional Development Commission (CCDR) Algarve responsible for agriculture, Pedro Valadas Monteiro.
The new brand will be exclusive to the Algarve Local Producers Network (RPLA) and will function as a “differentiation, affirmation and appreciation factor of produced products,” he added.
“What we want now is, in practice, to make a ‘pool’ of various products, from various producers, coming from various geographies of the Algarve, and being able to formalize something that has so far worked in a very atomized, very stray manner,” he said the responsible.
The project funded by European aid funds is promoted by a partnership of entities led by the University of Algarve, which are also part, among others, the Algarve Intermunicipal Community (Amal), the Algarve CCDR and the Hospitality and Tourism School of Vila Real de Santo António.
“The producer when he adheres is forced to respect a specifications book, namely in terms of issues such as quality, good agricultural practices,” said Pedro Valadas Monteiro.
The goal at this initial phase of the project is to achieve at least the number of 100 associated producers.
“But we want, above all, this project then, when finishing its execution period, has continuity and is carried out by the producers themselves, by the associations themselves,” explained the vice president of.
On the other hand, there will be “a guarantee seal” so that the end consumer has “guarantee of what he is buying” and “production obeys rules”.
“Nowadays, there are many stamps and sometimes it is complicated, but this approach is different, it is focused not on supermarkets, but more to the canteens of schools, and similar entities” in the region, said one of the producers present at the launch of the launch New brand, Luís Silva, from Quinta do Freixo.
This producer also stressed that this project would “shorten” current distribution circuits and bring consumers closer to producers in the region.
At the launch of the brand “Saberm the Algarve” were producers and transformers of food goods in the region, who were invited to adhere to the network and respect the sustainability guiding principles and to comply with the regulation of the Algarve local producers network.
