In 2024, the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the United Kingdom conducted a study to understand the aspirations and priorities of the British retirees over 60 years old. The investigation was conducted with its database, composed of people in the United Kingdom that have shown interest or participated in events organized by the House in the last five years.
Last year 2024, Portugal was considered the best renovation destination in Europe and the second best globally, according to the Global Retirement Index Annual. But what makes Portugal so attractive for retired, especially from the United Kingdom?
According to Christina Hippisley, director general of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the United Kingdom: “Portugal offers a set of unique factors that makes it an ideal destination for retired, especially for the British. The Soalheiro climate is the most evident reason, writes to. Our investigation revealed that 58% of respondents point to the favorable climate as the main reason for moving. In addition, welcoming culture, relatively low cost of living, and access to quality health care make the country very appealing to those who want to enjoy the reform. ”
What were the main conclusions of the study and how do they relate to interest in Portugal?
According to it: “Our research revealed some interesting information. More than 68% of respondents are open to the idea of moving to another country in the reform. However, 75% indicated that the difficulty of leaving the family behind and friends would weigh in the decision. Portugal facilitates this transition because it is relatively close to the UK and it is possible to travel easily between the two countries. ”
“Another relevant discovery was that more than 36% of respondents would like to continue working partially or remote during the renovation. Portugal, with its growing digital infrastructure and a more relaxed lifestyle, is an excellent destination for this trend. Whether through consulting, remote work or personal projects, retired people can stay active professionally while enjoying a quiet and solared environment. ”
With the advancement of age, health concerns increase. How does Portugal respond to these needs and provide a better environment for the retired ones?
CH: “Health is, in fact, one of the biggest concerns. In our study, 87% of respondents said that access to health care would play a key role in the decision to move to another country. Portugal has a quality health system, both public and private. Reformed may benefit from the well -evaluated public system, or opt for private services, which, compared to other European countries, are often more affordable. ”
“Interestingly, only 20% of respondents indicated that health would be their main concern when considering a change abroad. This suggests that, although important, other factors such as financial stability, quality of life, housing options and family proximity have an even greater weight. ”

Financial issues are always a crucial factor in reform planning. What has revealed your research on the financial priorities of the British reformed and how Portugal is positioned in this respect?
“Our study showed that 51% of respondents give priority to financial security and enjoy the fruits of their work during the reform. For some, this also includes ensuring a heritage for future generations, with 8% reporting that building wealth for descendants is an important concern. In addition, 64.5% of participants already own their main housing, which provides them with financial security and flexibility in buying real estate abroad. ”
“Portugal presents several financial advantages for the Reformed. The cost of living is generally lower than in many UK cities, especially with regard to housing, public services and everyday expenses. ”
The investigation also addressed the emotional and logistical challenges of a change abroad, such as the linguistic barrier. How relevant is this concern for the renovated potential?
CH: “The linguistic barrier has been pointed out as a concern for 34% of respondents, and is something that may have an impact on international change. However, many expatriates realize that they can manage life in Portugal by speaking only English, especially in popular areas between reformed, such as Algarve or Lisbon, where there are well -established international communities. ”
“That said, learning Portuguese can greatly facilitate integration and enrich the experience of living in the country. Fortunately, there are several language schools and community groups that help foreigners adapt to the new environment. ”
Looking to the future, which will continue to drive interest in Portugal as a destination for British retired?
The director-general says: “I believe that interest in Portugal will continue to grow. More and more people are adopting flexible forms of renovation, combining leisure and remote or part -time work. These people are looking for destinations that offer excellent quality of life as well as financial advantages. Portugal fits perfectly in this profile. With constant improvements in infrastructure, health and expatriate services, Portugal will remain one of the best choices for those who want to make the most of the years of renovation. ”
