At issue are suspicion related to the financing of the Celin Georgescu election campaign, in the presidential election of last November
Romanian police detained on Wednesday, the pro-Russian candidate who won the Romania presidential elections in November and whose vote was annulled shortly thereafter, on suspicions of Russian influence.
“Cilin Georgescu would present his new candidacy for the presidency. About 30 minutes ago, the system stopped him in traffic and he was arrested to be interrogated in the Attorney General’s Office. Where is democracy, where are the allies who should defend democracy? ”Can be read in a publication in the candidate’s official account.
At issue, according to Romanian television station 3 CNN, are suspicious related to funding from last year’s pro-Russian candidate’s election campaign.
According to the Romanian television station Digi24, prosecutors issued a Capture warrant about Georgescu and investigated their closest employees, including their bodyguard and mercenary leader Horatiu Potra.
In a statement cited by the local press, which does not mention the name of Georgescu, prosecutors suspect that 27 people have agreed against the constitution of Romania, being in question crimes such as incitement to public disorder, creation of a fascist organization and false statements about sources of financing an election campaign.
Subsequently, Georgescu itself suggested that searches aim to block its new candidacy for the presidency.
Romania plunged into political chaos at the end of last year, when Georgescu, the pro-Russian and skeptical candidate of NATO, won the first lap of the presidential and should face reformist Elena Lasconi in the second round.
The Constitutional Court decided to nullify the first return of the elections, suspected of interference from Russia to influence the results.
The new elections are scheduled for May 4, with the second lap scheduled for May 18, two weeks later.
